Jeremy Keith, in a gracious postscript to the “Pitch Perfect” kerfuffle. (via merlin)
I’d call this less gracious and more ill informed.
The point of the DMCA is precisely NOT to have employees making judgments on the legitimacy of claims. Or employers for that matter.
I respect you as a designer Jeremy, but not as an expert is US law. (of which I am not either)
Agile User Experience Projects, Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox
“Maintain a coherent vision of the user interface architecture. Create the initial vision during a “sprint zero” period — before any implementation has started — and maintain it through annual (or semi-annual) design vision sprints. You can’t just design individual features; they have to fit together into a coherent whole — a whole that must be designed as well. Bottom-up user interface design equals a confused total user experience (the Linux syndrome).”—
Agile User Experience Projects, Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox
In my experience, maintaining UI fidelity is the hardest part of working with agile programming. I find it surprising that Nielsen’s only advice is to “decide it all in advance.”
Any other advice on this out there?
How to be an adult.
An Incomplete Education
I’ll probably get skewered from every angle for this,1 but what the heck. A pal asked me what I know about women for a project he’s doing. Here’s 10 minutes’ worth. Covered with grains of salt like:
- Yes, a lot of this goes both ways. Obviously. Give it a rest.
- Yes, some of these you won’t agree with. That’s why you and I never dated. Right? Exactly.
Anyhow, for what it’s worth:
These are pretty much true for everyone.
I’d add:
Weigh whatever short term results gained from a decision against its long term effects. Think about who you value as a meaningful part of your life when doing so, and treat them as such.

Illegal downloaders 'spend the most on music', says poll - Crime, UK - The Independent
Hrm. THis is interesting. Though, I have to say, it’s not actually a solid argument against punishing downloaders, since, you know, they’d probably spend even more if they didn’t illegally download. ;)
I would unequivocally say that the more music I listen to, the more I buy.
Scratch that, the more music I listen to *that I like* the more I buy.
The flip side is, the less I listen to the less I buy. Across the board. I bet my paycheck that my listening and spending habits support this.
And I’d venture most downloaders feel the same. So, the record and radio and video and television and marketing industries can decide to play better music and more variety to spurn growth, or we can do what we’ve been doing for decades.
Search it out, copy it, burn it, torrent it, tape it and finally, buy it.
